Fairy Crafty Idea

Yesterday I was feeling a bit guilty about not spending quality time with my nearly three year old daughter. So I decided we should do a craft - and that ended up being a quilt for her fairy.
I let her loose in my stash of fabric that I was given by her great grandmother, and let her choose three fabrics.
Then I couldn't decide how to make this quilt really something she made, so I thought I would get her to move the fabric around while I pushed the footer down - but oh no - really making it yourself means pressing the footer - like a lunatic - flat tack!
It ended up looking pretty cute, and I got to give binding a go, which for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to do those corners. Thank goodness for Crazy Mom Quilts and her tutorial.

And now I have an idea inspired by a Princess and a Pea theme SouleMama did with her daughter. So here's my plan - together we will make more quilts (as many as I can handle). Then for her birthday I will buy her the book Princess and a Pea, as well as secretly make her everything else she needs to role play the story - brilliant! I love it!

Tonight I am working on a surprise for my seven year old son - I'll show you tomorrow!

That is so cute - it turned out great and I love the Princess and the Pea idea. I saw a pic of it the other day and thought it was amazing.
Thanks for the link to the tutorial. I'm in the middle of my first quilt and have just reached the binding stage and got a bit panicky! I think this looks like v helpful tutorial too:

What is it about the kiddies putting the pedal flat to the floor? My nephew does the exact same thing when I let him use the sewing machine.
I love the princess and the pea idea.. too cute!

Have you seen the Princess and the pea book illustrated by Lauren Childs?? Add it to your booklist!

Very cute quilts! And I second the idea by Karen (above). My daughter just received Lauren Childs' version for her 4th birthday and it is priceless.

And thank you for your very sweet comment on my Princess and the Pea dress! In response to your question about the double gauze, it feels very much like the kind of gauze you may use to bandage a wound. Hope that makes sense. I have seen a few people on flickr quilting with it, so I do think it's possible, but because of the loose weave I think you just need to be careful and perhaps use a larger seam allowance than normal. And pin like crazy when it comes time to do the quilting, because (at least in my limited experience) the double gauze stretches and shifts quite a bit. Does that help?! Hope so!

Can't wait to see what else you make!

Haha - I wonder how many of Soulemama's readers are busy doing their Princess and the Pea thing too - My Miss5 was reading it with me and we are in the middle of making some "mattresses" at the moment.

Loving the fairy!

Looks like the perfect Mother/daughter project! A whole stack of quilts sounds fabulous. I love how you used some of Great Grandma's fabric - makes it extra special.

Hey, I love the polka dot wallpaper - it looks fab! The quilts are so cute, such a lovely idea. How many of them are you going to make?

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I was thinking of making 10-12 quilts (mattresses) That seems to be how many other people are making.
